WHY IS MY TIRE PRESSURE WARNING LIGHT ON?

Your tire pressure warning light can come on for a number of reasons, but the most common is due to your tire pressure being low in one or more tires. Your tire pressure may have dropped due to pressure changes or simply from the gradual loss of air through the tires.

This light can also come on in the event that your tire pressure is noticeably high. Just as it’s possible to underfill your tires, it’s also possible to overfill them as well. Your tire pressure warning light will alert you in the event that your tires have too much air inside them.

WHAT DOES THE LIGHT MEAN?

In most cases, your tire pressure light will come on simply because your tire pressure is low due to normal wear and tear. Pressure changes from extreme changes in weather can easily take the air out of tires. Not to mention extended periods of driving can gradually reduce tire pressure.

That being said, another thing to look out for is in the possibility that a tire may be leaking air due to a puncture. It could be from a stray nail on the road or from damage done by a pothole. Tires can go flat for a number of reasons. The key here, though, is to make sure you take care of your flat tire as soon as possible, as your car won’t be able to drive long at that point.

WHAT IS MY TIRE PRESSURE SUPPOSED TO BE? tire

There’s no golden number when it comes to tire pressure, as recommended tire pressure can change from vehicle to vehicle. If you’re looking to learn what your tire pressure should be for your specific model, you’ll want to take a look at the tire pressure card. This is typically placed around the doorframe of your vehicle and it’ll show you different pressures based on tire size.

In most cases, though, many cars will have a recommended tire pressure of about 32 PSI to 35 PSI. This is about where you want to hover day to day for your average vehicle, but it’s important to consult your specific vehicle’s needs.

HOW IS TIRE PRESSURE AFFECTED BY SEASON?

Your tire pressure will change depending on the season and so it’s a good idea to make sure you account for these rapid changes in pressure. In the winter, the cold air will cause your tire’s air to seep out more quickly from the reduced temperature. It’s recommended to add more air to your tires at this point to account for the loss of air.

In the summer, be sure to drop your air pressure, as the heat of the air and the friction of the road will increase your tire pressure. Having overfilled tires in the winter can be very bad if you don’t reduce your pressure soon.
