Common Dashboard Warning Lights

Chevy dashboard warning lights

When you first turn on your vehicle, you’ll notice a wide variety of illuminated symbols surrounding the gauges on your dashboard. Most of these lights will turn off as your car powers on, but occasionally, you may notice one that comes on during your drives in the Indianapolis, Fishers, and Speedway areas. At Andy Mohr Speedway Chevrolet, we’re here to help explain what some of the most common warning lights mean to ensure that you’re well prepared should you happen to see one.

Some of the lights are meant to indicate that a specific system has been engaged or is working. With the inclusion of certain safety features, drivers will notice some of these systems come with their own light to indicate functioning. Read ahead to decode these systems’ corresponding lights!

Chevrolet Indicator Lights Seat Belt Light Indicator

In the first section of this guide, we’ll walk you through the common indicator symbols you may see and what each of them means.

  • Safety Belt Reminder: This light is meant to remind drivers to wear their seatbelt; you may notice it flashing or creating an audible noise if you or one of your passengers does not have on their safety belt.
  •  Cruise Control Indicator: If you see what looks like a small version of a speedometer on your dash, it’s a signal to let you know that your cruise control is engaged. However, until you set your maximum speed, this feature won’t begin functioning.
  • High Beam Indicator: If you see what looks like the letter D with some lines behind it, it’s your high beam indicator, which signifies that you’ve turned your high beams on. To be courteous to other drivers, make sure you click them off when passing.

Chevrolet Warning Lights Battery Light Indicator

In this section, we’ll discuss warning lights. These are the lights that turn on to indicate that something in your vehicle may need further attention.

  • Check Engine Light: This warning signal will look like a small engine on your dashboard, and it’s usually indicative of an emissions issue. However, this can sometimes illuminate because of something as simple as the gas cap not being closed properly. If you’ve tightened it and given it time but still see the light, you’ll want to get it checked out by a professional.
  • Gas Gauge: If you see the warning light that looks like a gas pump, check your fuel levels. This light means you’ve reached a low enough level that you may soon run out of gas, so head to your local pumps to fill up.
  • Traction Control: If you see the image of a vehicle with two S-shaped lines behind it, and it’s not flashing, this is telling you that there’s an issue with your traction control system. However, if the light is blinking, it means that the system has been engaged and is working properly.
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System: If you see an unfinished circle with an exclamation point inside, it means your tire pressure is off. In order to make this light go out, you’ll want to swing by an air pump and ensure that your tire pressure meets the minimum requirement as set forth by the manufacturer. Check your owner’s manual for details.
  • Battery Light: If there’s something happening with your battery that requires your attention, you’ll see a small box with a plus and minus symbol inside. This could indicate an issue with your battery charging, so be sure to get a battery inspection ASAP.
