Chevy Equinox vs GMC Terrain

Chevy Equinox

As far as crossover vehicles go, there are two that should be deeply considered for your next vehicle. The Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain present several configurations with a wide array of trim levels. They also offer great fuel efficiency, and each of them possesses unique features that will make one your ideal choice for drives in the Indianapolis, Fishers, and Speedway, IN, areas.

At Andy Mohr Speedway Chevrolet, we want to show you some of the key features in each SUV so that you’re better able to make an informed decision. Our Chevy Equinox vs. GMC Terrain comparison will line these two vehicles side by side to show you where they excel. Check out what each car has to offer in terms of added space, fuel economy, and more!

Equinox vs Terrain: Engine Specifications & Gas Mileage

Engine Specifications

When comparing these two vehicles, it will come down to the subtle nuances of their powertrain and performance abilities for drivers to make their decision. If you’re looking mainly for power, you’ll find that these two small SUVs are evenly matched.

They both come standard with a 1.5L turbo 4-cylinder engine that reaches up to 170 horsepower and 203 lb-ft of torque. They are even each capable of towing up to 1,500 pounds when properly equipped, so in this respect, you’ll be happy with either ride.

However, when it comes down to efficiency, you can expect more from the Chevy Equinox. The GMC Terrain offers an EPA-estimated 25 city/30 highway MPG, while the Equinox can give you an EPA-estimated 26 city/31 highway MPG.

If you decide to get your SUV equipped with the available AWD (all-wheel drive) system, you’ll still have better fuel economy with the Equinox. The AWD Equinox earned EPA-estimated 25 city/30 highway MPG, while the AWD Terrain can only achieve 25 city/ 28 highway MPG.

The additional expected gas mileage on the highway in the Chevy can certainly add up during long trips.

Which Is Bigger: The Chevy Equinox or GMC Terrain?

Which Is Bigger

In terms of what you can expect for yourself and your passengers, a small SUV doesn’t have to mean a small amount of space. Either the Chevrolet Equinox or GMC Terrain can fit up to five passengers. You’ll have plenty of room for all your travels inside the Chevy Equinox with these dimensions:

  • Front/rear headroom: 40 inches/38.5 inches
  • Front/rear legroom: 40.9 inches/39.9 inches

You’ll find that the Terrain matches most of these measurements. It also has 40 inches of headroom in the front and 38.5 inches in the rear. It even has 40.9 inches of front legroom. However, there are a few places where the Equinox pulls ahead.

In the Chevy Equinox, you’ll have a bit more space for your passengers with the 39.9 inches of legroom in the rear seat. The GMC Terrain only offers 39.7 inches of legroom in the back, and that lack of space may cost the comfort of your taller friends.

When it comes to overall passenger volume, the Equinox still pulls ahead of the Terrain. While the Chevy has 103.5 cubic feet of total passenger space, the GMC can only offer up to 103.2 cubic feet.

The Equinox also has more to offer in terms of cargo space: 29.9 cubic feet behind the back seats and 63.9 cubic feet behind the front seats. Meanwhile, the Terrain has just 29.6 cubic feet and 63.3 cubic feet behind the second and first rows, respectively.

The additional space in the Equinox could mean room for a bag that contains weekend essentials, which could be beneficial to you. Plus, only the Equinox has to unique underfloor storage compartment in the rear for you to store essentials. From emergency supplies to smaller cargo items that need to be secured, this convenient cargo tool will come in handy.

Exterior Measurements

While the Equinox and Terrain both have the same wheelbase measurement—107.3 inches—and have the same height of 65.4 inches, you’ll find that around the outside, their measurements do differ in a few spots.

One measurement that will make a difference in your on-road performance is the minimum ground clearance of each vehicle. When you find yourself trekking over uneven ground, you’ll want an SUV with higher ground clearance to get you over the bumps and rocks in your path. That’s where the 7.6-inch ground clearance of the base Equinox comes in handy.

While the Terrain can handle a lot, its base model comes in with 6.9 inches of ground clearance, which might leave you with rocks scraping the undercarriage. Even at their highest ground clearance measurement, the Equinox can offer up to 8 inches and the Terrain remains slightly behind with 7.9 inches.

Chevy Equinox vs GMC Terrain: Nothing but Style

Nothing but Style

Who doesn’t like a bit of style in their vehicle? Just like your clothes, the car that you drive is a way to project your personality out into the world. As such, the Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain are built with unique designs that help you look fantastic when you’re out on the road.

You’ll find that both models are designed with some confidence-instilling stances. These SUVs stand tall with a high ground clearance, which provides you with a high view over traffic. This strength is further complemented by the large front fascia on both cars that conveys a sense of power.

Inside, you’ll find a sportier look with the Chevy Equinox—along with a much more youthful-looking interior—thanks to an available two-tone, Jet Black/Brandy style and available perforated leather-appointed seat trim. This vehicle offers a fun design that’s suited for more spirited drives.

Further adding to the Equinox’s energetic design is the use of unique colors. Drivers of this SUV will find available colors like Cajun Red Tintcoat and Midnight Blue Metallic that you just don’t find with the GMC Terrain.

Built-In Entertainment on the Go

Entertainment on the Go

When you’ve got your whole family along with you for a drive, it’s good to have some entertainment to keep everyone engaged.

The Equinox and Terrain offer an available Bose® premium, 7-speaker audio system, which helps provide the finest listening experience available. You’ll enjoy music in a way you’ve never heard before with this exceptional audio engineering.

Also, both are available with the rear-seat infotainment system with DVD Player. This technology allows your rear passengers to play a movie in the back whenever they want. Long road trips will go by much faster for your passengers when they’re relaxing to a good movie.

While you’ll even be able to easily connect to your smartphone through the standard Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ integration feature of both SUVs, the Equinox has a little extra to offer. For one thing, the Equinox offers an available wireless charging feature for your phone.

Located just below the audio controls, you can simply put your phone down and let it charge while you drive to your destination. This way, you’ll be charged up and ready to go when driving with the Equinox.

State-of-the-Art Safety

State-of-the-Art Safety

Safety is a point of focus for many of us while driving on today’s busy roads. To help you feel more secure while out on the road, the Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain feature their own active safety features. These systems help make you aware of possible accidents and more, so you can have full situational awareness.

For example, these two crossovers are designed with an available Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert, which alerts you to other cars riding alongside you. If your vehicle senses that there’s a car in the lane next to you, it will provide an alert on your side mirror. This makes sure you’re always aware of other vehicles, even while they’re riding in your blind zone.

Both can also provide extra security with their standard Rear Seat Reminder feature. This technology provides an audible alert if you exit the car with something in the back seat. This is a useful feature for helping you make sure you check the back seat for any pets on a hot day.

Even though they both come standard with a rear vision camera, only the Equinox is available with the HD Surround Vision camera. Using multiple cameras positioned all around your Equinox, this system can generate an overhead image of your vehicle showing you everything surrounding you.
