What Happens at the End of a Lease?

So, what happens at the end of your lease? In general, you’ll take your vehicle to a lease return center, have the vehicle inspected, finish some final paperwork, cover any remaining fees, and go on your way.

However, there are some things you can do before you head to the return center to make sure everything goes off without a hitch.

Take some time to think about what you’ll want to do after you lease. You’ll have three options to choose from:

• Return the vehicle and walk away
• Return the vehicle and lease another model
• Buy the vehicle for the remainder of its value

You’ll want to talk to a team member about what you plan to do as the steps of your return process will vary. Then, take a few steps to get your vehicle ready.

Preparing Your Vehicle

The vehicle will have to be inspected before you return it, so it’s generally a good idea to clean the vehicle ahead of time. Look over the interior and clear out any empty water bottles and crumpled receipts that may have gotten lost under the seats.

A quick vacuum to remove crumbs and dirt from the carpets, floors, and seats will go a long way. You should also keep any eye out for stains and tears in the upholstery. While minor wear and tear is expected, anything that looks like it can’t be cleaned or repaired will likely be marked during the inspection.

Complete a similar process on the exterior, paying attention to any dents and scratches in the paint. Taking a few extra moments to buff those out to help the inspection move along smoothly.

Finally, check the tires. Make sure they don’t look excessively worn and have the right air pressure.

Return Your Leased Vehicle

When everything seems to be in order, it’s time for the inspection. Some dealers will ask that you schedule the inspection ahead of time. In this case, an inspector will come to you and check the vehicle out before you head to the lease return center.
