How Often Should You Change Your Oil? | Andy Mohr Speedway Chevy

Oil Change

At Andy Mohr Speedway Chevrolet, our Indianapolis area customers often ask us the question: How often should you change your oil?

And that’s a great question, especially since clean oil is crucial to your car’s operation. It keeps the moving parts inside your engine lubricated, and regulates temperatures, preventing damaging friction and overheating.

If you want your Chevy to operate at peak efficiency, and last a long time, it’s important to perform routine oil changes. So, to help you know when it’s time to seek out a Chevy service center in the Fishers or Speedway area, we created this guide.

WHEN YOU SHOULD CHANGE YOUR CAR’S OIL Chevy oil change

The general word of wisdom used to be to change your oil every 3,000 miles, but, as manufacturers have improved upon their vehicle designs, that number has gone up.

The best way to know your car’s needs is to check your owner’s manual or contact your local Chevy service center.

Currently, the general recommendation for all Chevy vehicles is to change the oil every 7,500 miles, but that’s not a hard and fast rule. It can actually change depending on how often you use your car.

If you have OnStar® activated for your vehicle, you’ll actually receive vehicle diagnostics every month that’ll let you know if you’re due for an oil change. You can access them through the Chevrolet website’s Owner Center.

If you don’t have OnStar®, you can also look for several signals from your car.

SIGNS YOU NEED AN OIL CHANGE

If your car is overdue for an oil change, it’ll provide you with several warning signs. If you notice any of the following, it’s time to schedule a service appointment with a trusted Chevy service center: oil warning light

  • The Chevrolet Oil Light Monitor (OLM) turns on: This warning light is located on the driver dashboard or center touch screen in some models and monitors your oil life on a scale of 1%-100%. At 15% it’ll prompt you to schedule your service as soon as possible.
  • Low oil: If you don’t have an OLM, or prefer to keep tabs on your oil life manually, you can check your oil by opening up the hood. With your ignition off and engine cool, examine the dipstick. If the oil level is lower than the “add” line, your oil is likely dirty and overdue for a change.
  • Dirty oil: While checking your oil levels, look at the color. Clean oil should be a rich amber. If your oil is a deep black color, it’s dirty and needs to be changed.
  • Performance issues and weird smells: Clean oil keeps your car performing efficiently. If you notice a slowed acceleration, a knocking sound in the engine, an oil smell in the cabin, or more frequent fill-up than normal, schedule service as soon as possible.
