Community Spotlight: Indiana Medical History Museum

Medical Museum

If you think about the medical field and what has changed in just the last 20, 40, or 100 years, you can clearly see the change and improvements that have been in both medicine and practice. With all the progress that has been made, there is still more to be done. The best way to inspire new ideas and change for the future, is to observe and learn from the past. You can do just this at Indiana Medical History Museum (IMHM). Learn more in this local community spotlight.

Preserving the Past for the Present & the Future

At the Indiana Medical History Museum, they believe in the importance of upholding medical history in order to inform the present and inspire the future. They do this through collecting medical artifacts, providing medical exhibits, publications, and programs, and preserving the Old Pathology Building and Central State Hospital.

These two Indiana medical buildings hold a rich history of medical care and patient stories. The Central State Hospital was the first State mental hospital in Indiana, and you can take a tour to learn the story of how the treatment of mental health patients has changed and the immense progress that has been made since the 1800s, as well as the continued progress that still is being made to this day.

Guided Medical History Tours

Medicinal Garden Whether you’re teaching a class of pre-med students, or you’re just curious of learning more about Indiana history, there are several options available to you to book a tour of the IMHM:

  • Group Tours: If you’re an educator and would like to bring with you a group of six or more students, you can schedule an exclusive group tour before visiting. Be sure to ask about the interdisciplinary and online curriculum available for both high school and college students as well.
  • Visit the Doctor’s Office: The office of Dr. Marion Scheetz of Lewisville has been preserved and remains completely intact since he began his career as a family practitioner before WWII. This was the common path at the time for doctors, where they were the go-to source in Indiana small towns and performed all medical needs for the neighborhood. You can walk through Dr. Scheetz’s office where you can view artifacts donated by his descendants as well as the Indiana Academy of Family Physicians.
  • Tour the Garden: Visit the Medicinal Plant Garden, which features more than ninety different medicinal plants, including trees, shrubs, vines, annuals, and herbaceous species. These medicinal plants come from all parts of the world including Native America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. You can tour the garden by visiting on Saturdays between June and September, signing up for a guided tour, or by taking yourself through a self-guided tour during operational hours.
