Chevy Malibu MPG

At Andy Mohr Speedway Chevrolet, we understand the need for a car that can help you save money at the gas pump—and on the streets throughout the Indianapolis, Fishers, and Speedway, IN, areas. A sedan with an efficient engine isn’t just a penny-saver but a convenience, too.

The 2021 Chevy Malibu is known for its interior comfort and safety, but what about its gas mileage?

Read this review to discover how the Chevy Malibu MPG is achieved!

CHEVY MALIBU GAS MILEAGE

GAS MILEAGE

The Chevy Malibu offers two different efficient powertrain options.

The first is a 1.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. Turbocharging helps churn up a bit of extra power at 160 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Nevertheless, the Malibu still maintains an EPA-estimated 29 MPG city and 36 MPG highway with standard front-wheel drive.

To help with fuel efficiency, the 1.5L engine also comes standard with stop/start technology. This technology turns your engine off instead of allowing your engine to idle. For example, if you’re at a red light, your engine will turn off to save fuel and then turn on again when you’re ready to hit get moving.

The second powertrain is a 2L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. This one has even more muscle with 250 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. And for that reason, gas mileage is reduced a bit to an EPA-estimated 22 MPG city and 33 MPG highway. This is still quite impressive given the engine’s horsepower.

SMOOTH TRANSMISSIONS

SMOOTH TRANSMISSIONS

To aid in keeping the Malibu MPG down, Chevy has finely tuned its transmission options to ensure the smoothest ride possible.

The 1.5L engine is paired with a Continuously Variable Transmission that focuses on fuel efficiency. These transmissions also offer smooth acceleration, smoother operation, and even the ability to adapt to road conditions and supply additional power when needed.

The 2L engine is paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission. It is electronically controlled, which allows for more precise control.

CHEVY MALIBU: SCULPTED WITH MPG IN MIND

SCULPTED WITH MPG IN MIND

You might not even think about it, but the design of a sedan’s exterior can greatly contribute to how much gas it saves out on the road.

Just take the Malibu, for example. Its body is sculpted to present a more aerodynamic shape. This way, the car really seems to glide while cruising, exerting a little less effort, and ultimately, improving gas mileage.

Small vents under its black grille also improve the way the air flows over and under the vehicle. The less air resistance there is, the more agile and efficient your sedan can be—and it doesn’t hurt that it looks stylish, too!

FUEL-SAVING TIPS

While the Chevy Malibu already has great fuel economy, there are small changes you can make to your driving routine that will make your fuel efficiency even better. If you already do some of these, consider it a reminder; if not, we hope these tips help you save a little bit of money!

The first tip we have is probably something almost everyone does a bit already: drive defensively and sensibly. Aggressive driving, including rapid acceleration and sudden braking, can waste gas. By driving safely, you will not only save some gas but potentially save yourself and other drivers.

The next tip is in the same vein: follow the speed limit. It not only is the law, but it helps increase your fuel economy. Each vehicle has its own optimal fuel efficiency speed, but in general, gas mileage tends to get worse as you go faster than 50 miles per hour.

Make sure you remove your roof cargo containers. We all take road trips from time to time, and some of us use roof cargo haulers. These containers increase your aerodynamic drag, making your engine work a little bit harder to get you up to the same speeds. A harder-working engine uses more gas. You’ll also save some gas by removing unnecessary items from your vehicle.

Are you someone who drives on the highway for long trips? Use your cruise control. Cruise control helps maintain a constant speed, so you aren’t using more gas with more frequent accelerations.

SAFETY FEATURES OF THE CHEVY MALIBU

SAFETY FEATURES

The Chevy Malibu has plenty of safety and driver-assist features to not only help with fuel economy but also keep you and your passengers safe while you’re on the go.

The Chevy Malibu comes standard with a tire pressure monitoring system. This system monitors the air in your Malibu’s tires. If a tire’s air pressure dips too low, your Malibu will alert you. This is helpful in terms of fuel economy because tires that are low on air don’t perform as well. If they aren’t performing as well, you won’t get as good fuel efficiency.

The Malibu also has some more technological safety features. One available feature that might help you maintain good fuel economy is Adaptive Cruise Control. This system automatically keeps a gap time set by the driver between the Malibu and the vehicle ahead of them. You’ll need to brake and accelerate less since your car will do it for you.

Another helpful safety feature available for the Malibu is the available Forward Collision Alert. This system warns you if a front collision might happen, so you can brake. It also can provide a tailgating alert to let you know if you’re following a vehicle too closely.

If you’re a driver who spends a lot of time on the highway, another safety feature worth looking into is the available Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert. This system provides visual alerts on your side mirrors when a vehicle is on your side or in your blind spot to help you avoid a collision when you’re changing lanes.
